         Nintendo Wii Video Game Platform

The Wii (???, W??, pronounced /?wi?/, like the pronoun we) is a home video game console released by Nintendo. As a seventh-generation console, the Wii primarily competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of both. As of December 31, 2008 the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales.

A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detect movement in three dimensions. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.

The Wii is Nintendo's fifth home console, the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube, and able to play all official GameCube games. Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards. By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets.

At its highest level, success in professional tennis is all about how you perform at the most prestigious events on the circuit. The Grand Slam tournaments are the biggest and most important of these and EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis now gives gamers an exclusive home where they can play all four of these: the Australian Open, the French Open at Paris' Roland Garros, the championships at Wimbledon in London and the U.S. Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. • Swing the Racket Like a Grand Slam Champion - Users feel like they are actually playing tennis as they swing real forehands and backhands. Hit a variety of shots such as top spin, slice, flat, lobs and drop shots.
  • Grand Slam Career - As the only video game licensed to feature Wimbledon, users can play all four Grand Slams. Authentic stadiums and venues are recognizable as the real grounds.
  • Wii MotionPlus - One of the first games compatible with the new Wii MotionPlus. When the peripheral is added, the experience is enhanced with added shot depth and precise ball placement. Racket rotation is also recognized so you can spin your stick just like the pros do.

Rating : The best Wii tennis game we've tried and we got to try the wii motionplus remote!, June 30, 2009

By A. Chandler "artistalana" (Austin, TX)

First, let me start by saying that we have two tennis players in our home: one who is a master of the game, and one who is quite the opposite.
We both were fortunate enough to get to try out this game, as well as a few others, for a demo on the Wii MotionPlus and some new fitness dvds and games for our local tv news. And we fell in love!...with both this game and the new Wii remote.
We were able to try the game for comparison with and without the motionplus addition so I can confidently say either way, this game is still our favorite wii tennis game we tried regardless of your tennis level...from pro to beginner.
First, the game features Wimbledon and famous tennis pros...but, better yet, the true skills and actions of those pros. For example, the way that Andy Roddick plays tennis is different than Martina Navratilova or John Mc Endroe or Serena Williams. And you actually see them play with moves they are known for and the differences in their games. The nuances that make it real to play them are absolutely apparent. I could honestly tell!
For those who want to take babysteps, the Wii can allow you to have your player move for you while you just concentrate on what you do with your racket and swings...but, if you are more advanced, you can move your player with the nunchuck.
There are practice courts for you to peruse in order to increase your skill level but also to familiarize you with each court and the various court surfaces. This also helped me adjust and build up my skill level prior to the primary game play.
The characters are not the basic handless mii characters but they are also not graphically lifelike. Think Speed Racer syle...kind of lifelike, but kind of cartoonish. They look just fine in my opinion but as far as graphics go, that's the best way I can describe how they are.
So, as much as we loved the game itself with the regular Wii remote, let me verbally jump up and down about how much more fun we had playing with the new Wii MotionPlus (this is one of the first games created for this advancement so I have to touch on it so you can compare if you wish to purchase this or not) when we got to be among the first to try this gadget out for the news fitness segment....OOOOOO AAAAAAAAH!! The game suddenly came to life even more. Wanna spin your racket? Yep...you can, it recognizes every movement we did, even the subtle ones that make tennis really lifelike vs. a simple game. You can aim your shots...you can move your racket from high to low to slice, or low to high to top spin, it recognizes shot depth and changes in your wrist so you truly PLAY tennis vs play a game. You can also charge the net in this game. Every subtle action of your hand and wrist comes into play...it truly takes you from your livingroom into the body of your Mii! And, even without that, we liked the extra length it added to the wii remote so it actually FELT more like a tennis racket.
All in all, this is the most realistic game of tennis we've tried for the Wii and I am pretty sure we have all the previous tennis games because of my sweetheart tennis fanatic.
The response time is also 1:1 if you clip on the Wii MotionPlus. Very nice! I must say, that a couple times during this game I felt like the 1:1 reaction time wasn't there...but not enough for me to truly question it...the response was no doubt faster than with a regular wii remote.
Music? loved it! fun and snappy
NEGATIVES: (These are the reasons why I couldn't give it the full 5 stars) When we played split screen there seemed to be a little bit of a lag for sure...this is one of the instances I was talking about that seemed more specific to the game than the wii motionplus. We didn't see a lag in the other games we played with it. It was very subtle and wasn't something of concern nor was it enough to be irritating and is still better than any other gaming experience. Also, if you don't have the WiiMotionPlus some of the things I loved about the game will be lost for you...those subtle nuances it picked up that allowed me to really play realistic tennis. It was still a top notch game without it, mind you, but since it (the motionplus) is a cost that is separate from what the Wii has and must be upgraded if desired, it's kind of ashame for those who can't experience it without the extra cost.
That said, if you are thinking about ordering another game that is compatible with the wii motionplus, it comes "free" at the time of this review when you order the other games it's compatible with such as the tiger woods game and sports resort. So...if those are on your plan to order, you'll have a motionplus with this game. It is ashame, therefore, that it's not included when you get this one.
CONCLUSION: For this household of tennis beginner and advanced player, we both loved the game. It was amazingly good when we were allowed to play it with the Wii MotionPlus. However, even without the new remote, in my opinion it's still the most realistic wii tennis game out there and great fun--especially with TRUE personalities and techniques of the pros it features shining through through realistic actions.
We loved the game and it now will replace all other preceding ones!
